Further accident in Gubrist Tunnel
Scarcely 24 hours after the crash in the Gubrist Tunnel which cost two young men their lives, a further collision happened there on Wednesday evening. Fortunately, on this occasion, no-one was injured.
It was shortly after 9.15 pm in the lane for traffic travelling in the Bern direction when 7 vehicles, 6 cars and one van, crashed into each other causing considerable damage.
Speaking a few hours after the incident, Werner Schaub, spokesman for the Zurich Cantonal Police, said, "Luckily, no-one was injured and we have now been able to clear the wreckage from the tunnel."
The cause of the accident is still being investigated but Schaub added, "In most cases in accidents of this sort, motorists have been driving far too close behind the vehicle in front or they have been momentarily distracted."
As previously reported, maintenance work on the Gubrist Tunnel means that traffic in opposite directions is not separated as normal at night time.
It has been a bad week for road deaths in the canton. On Friday 9 June a 63-year-old man was killed after he came off the road and crashed into a tree near Stallikon.
