"Swiss Watching" with author Diccon Bewes
Swiss Watching is an original and intriguing read, going behind the stereotypes of banks and skis, francs and cheese. In Swiss Watching, Diccon seeks to dispel the myths and to unravel the true meaning of “Swissness”. One country with 4 languages, 26 cantons and 7.8 million people (but only 78% of them Swiss): there’s nowhere else like it in Europe.
Switzerland may be almost 400 km from the nearest drop of seawater, but it is an island at the centre of Europe. In a land of contradictions, this is a picture of the real and normally unseen Switzerland, a place where the breathtaking scenery shaped a nation not just a tour itinerary, and where tradition is as important as innovation. It’s also the story of its people, who have more power than their politicians, but can’t speak to one another in the same language.
Swiss Watching was published in 2010 and went on to become the bestselling English book in Switzerland and a Financial Times Book of the Year. This event coincides with the launch of the German version, “Der Schweizversteher”.
Diccon grew up in Hampshire. A degree in International Relations from LSE and an 18-month world trip set him up for a career in travel writing. After ten years at Lonely Planet and Holiday Which? magazine, he decamped to Switzerland, where he was manager of the Stauffacher English Bookshop in Bern. In his own words,“As well as grappling with German grammar, re-learning to cross the road properly, and overcoming my innate desire to form an orderly queue, I have spent the last few years exploring the bits of Switzerland I’d never heard of before. And eating lots of chocolate.”
Diccon will entertain us with anecdotes and readings from the book. There will be the opportunity to purchase the book (both versions) on the night and to have it signed by Diccon.
