Two killed in head-on collision in city tunnel




Two people have been killed and three people injured following a head-on crash in the Gubrist Tunnel on the A1 late on Tuesday evening.
 
The accident happened at a time when traffic travelling in opposite directions was not separated as normal because of repair work. For reasons yet unknown, a car travelling from Zurich in the Bern direction driven by a 27-year-old man accompanied by a 31-year-old passenger on the front seat and another 29-year-old in the rear crashed into a car driven by a 38-year-old woman. According to the Zurich Cantonal Police, traffic was beginning to build up at the time.
 
The collision was so severe that the 29-year-old man died at the scene of the accident and the 27-year-old driver died shortly afterwards in hospital. The third passenger in the car and the woman driver of the other car, along with her child who was sitting on the back seat, all had to be taken to hospital.
 
As a result of the accident the tunnel had to be closed for 5 hours, during which time traffic had to be diverted to surrounding roads. At the time of writing police are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident.
