Two trains stuck in two tunnels
A technical fault caused a train to get stuck in a tunnel on Tuesday afternoon, leading to delays for the passengers on board.
The Interregio train was on its way from Zurich Airport to Zug and Lucerne shortly after 2 pm when a problem developed while it was in the Zimmerberg Tunnel between Horgen and Baar. As the driver was not able to rectify the problem himself, another train was summoned to help.
When the train was able to be started again, it returned to Zurich Main Station for closer inspection. In all, the 150 passengers were delayed by some 90 minutes.
In a separate incident two hours earlier, a damaged rail in a tunnel between Zurich Main Station and Stadelhofen Station meant that passengers on this suburban line service were delayed, though main-line services were not affected. Only after 3 hours was normal service resumed.
According to Reto Schärli, spokesman of the SBB, a rail had cracked though at no time was there any risk to passengers.
